Box Office Top Five

Hidden Figures kept the number one spot for the second week in a row with $20.5 million. La La Land rode that Golden Globes momentum to second place with $14.6 million. Sing took third with $13.9 million while Rogue One dropped to fourth with $13.8 million. The Bye Bye Man opened in fifth with $13.4 million.

Here is a look at a few films that are opening on January 20th.

Split (PG-13) 116 mins.

M. Night Shyamalan is on the verge of a comeback. After a decade of increasingly worse and worse movies, the filmmaker started to turn things around in 2015 with the low-budget horror-comedy The Visit. Shyamalan sticks to the low-budget horror thing with Split, but adds a terrific James McAvoy performance at the film’s center. The film looks like it will do very well with audiences. I wouldn’t be surprised if it opened at number one.

The Founder (PG-13) 115 mins.

The story of Ray Croc and the beginnings of McDonald’s, The Founder stars Michael Keaton in what is probably a great performance. The film was being positioned to win some Oscars, but it hasn’t gotten a huge marketing push and there’s a ton of competition at the moment. In all likelihood, The Founder will come and go, and won’t make much of a dent at the box office.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage (PG-13) 110 mins.

Fifteen years later, Vin Diesel returns to one of the biggest roles of his early career. xXx: Return of Xander Cage sees Diesel back as the extreme sports James Bond, along with Samuel L. Jackson, Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, and more. Honestly, if you’re not sold just from the sight of watching Diesel ride a motorcycle on the ocean, then we have nothing more to discuss. I predict this opens at number two, right behind Split.

The Bottom Line

Split will open in first place, while xXx will take second. Hidden Figures will drop to third. Sing will continue being a solid performer in fourth place, followed by La La Land in fifth.
