Box Office Top Five

The Fate of the Furious  opened lower than its predecessor, but still topped the box office last week with a gargantuan $98.8 million debut. The Boss Baby dropped to second with $16.1 million. Beauty and the Beast landed in third with $13.8 million, while Smurfs: The Lost Village took fourth with $6.8 million. Going in Style rounded out the top five with $6.3 million.

Here is a look at a few films that are opening on April 21st.

Free Fire (R) 85 mins.

Ben Wheatley’s action opus hits screens this weekend, and it looks totally bonkers. A great cast that includes Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer and Sharlto Copley just shooting at each other for 90 minutes? I’m in – and reviews have mostly been pretty solid, too. I think this will do decent business at the box office, and I’m going to predict that it opens at number three.

The Lost City of Z (PG-13) 140 mins.

The new epic from James Gray, following in the footsteps of David Lean, The Lost City of Z is gathering great reviews. I’m incredibly exciting to see it, and knowing Gray’s previous work, it will almost certainly look amazing. How does that translate to box office success? We’ll see – it’s opening in wide release, which is surprising, and there hasn’t been a ton of marketing surrounding it. I’m going to be optimistic and say it opens at number five.

The Fate of the Furious will keep its number one spot, while Born in China, the new Disneynature documentary, will open at number two. Free Fire will open at number three, while Beauty and the Beast will drop to number four. The Lost City of Z will round out the top five..
