ADVENTURE TIME: Warner Bros. Developing Big Screen Adaptation

Adventure Time Finn Jake

Warner Bros. Developing Adventure Time Movie. Warner Bros. is adapting Cartoon Network’s hit animated show Adventure Time for the big screen. Not many details about the film and how it ties into the television series continuity have been released other than it will be an animated feature produced by Chris McKay (director of The Lego Batman Movie) and Roy Lee (The Lego Movie producer) and series creator Pendleton Ward will also help to write and produce.

Twelve-year-old Finn battles evil in the Land of Ooo. Assisted by his magical dog, Jake, Finn roams the Land of Ooo righting wrongs and battling evil. Usually that evil comes in the form of the Ice King, who is in search of a wife. He’s decided he should wed Princess Bubblegum, though she doesn’t want to marry him. Still, he persists in trying to steal her away, and Finn and Jake, along with Lady Raincorn (a cross between a unicorn and a rainbow) do their best to keep her from harm.

Currently in its sixth season, Adventure Time is a hit in the ratings, a critical success and one of Cartoon Network’s flagship shows. Even though the most die-hard Adventure Time fan would admit that the show is extremely odd (to say he least), the shows quirkiness perfectly lends itself to adapting Adventure Time stories to the big screen because the show employs such a flexible narrative structure. Every episode of Adventure Time has the feeling of an acid trip induced fever dream and it wouldn’t be difficult to utilize any one of the series numerous zany plots or kooky characters as a jumping off point for a 90-minute cinematic adventure.

An Adventure Time movie would be an ideal way to lure new fans to the franchise as most episodes of the show work well as stand alone segments and the series doesn’t require viewers to catch up on long and complicated back-stories to keep up with whats going on. I would like to see the series take the Captain America: The Winter Soldier / Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. approach and have a movie event that ties into the progression of the series. A cinematic Adventure Time event would be the perfect way to get a quick Finn and Jake fix during the excruciating wait between seasons.
