Eisenberg’s casting as the Man of Steel’s arch-nemesis proved to be very controversial amongst fans. In past films, the character has been portrayed by Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey, both older men with a certain physicality about them that lent them to Luthor. Eisenberg, on the other hand, is comparatively younger and doesn’t cast such an imposing figure, leading some to doubt that he could pull the role off.
Speaking in a lengthy interview however, the Social Network star made the case for his interpretation of the character. While Luthor has been typically portrayed as a campy criminal mastermind in previous Superman films, the way Eisenberg describes his take on the villain suggests that it will be much more faithful to the source material than previous iterations:
“My character is a megalomaniacal, narcissistic guy who thinks he’s saving humanity by destroying Superman – who he views as an alien invader who’s here to wreak havoc at will. Yes, claims to sometimes do good but actually he poses more of a threat because he has more power than anyone. I think of myself as the savior of humanity.” If this is the Lex Luthor Zack Snyder is delivering to fans then this will be the truest depiction of comic book Lex Luthor to date.
