The news was broken by the Internet Movie Database’s Twitter account, which stated “Breaking! Lauren Cohan has been added to the cast of Batman v Superman” and linked to the casting on it’s main site. While casting lists are open for anyone to edit on the popular site, Comic Book Movie observes that IMDb’s Twitter account only posts information it has already confirmed. If that is the case, then audiences can definitely expect to see Cohan in the film.
Cohan’s addition to Batman v Superman cuts very close to the movie’s release date, with the film set for release on March 25th. She is set to play Martha Wayne, mother of Bruce Wayne, according to the IMDb cast listing. In the source material, Martha and her husband Thomas were murdered during a robbery on their way home from an opera performance, rendering the young Bruce an orphan. Their deaths, although emotionally scarring, would inspire him to fight for justice under the guise of Batman. This major aspect of Batman’s background was present in both the Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan films and, if Cohan’s casting is any indication, it appears the new film will retain it as well.
While it’s a little disappointing that The Walking Dead star hasn’t been chosen for an ongoing role in these movies as someone like Batgirl, this is still a pretty cool bit of casting news. The trailer previously revealed that Watchmen‘s Jeffrey Dean Morgan – who will be getting to know Cohan very well on the Atlanta set of her AMC series in the coming months when he takes on the role of Negan – is playing Thomas Wayne and that we’re getting another Bruce Wayne origin story.
