BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (2016): Superman Threw 1st Threat

Henry Cavill Ben Affleck Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Latest Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice movie clip adds context to infamous threat. Everybody likes a good ‘shot heard around the World’ headline, and where DoJ has been concerned, Batman’s “do you bleed” line has been the grabber. Personally never understood it, as it seemed overly aggressive – even for Dark Knight Returns Batman – to just lay at another ‘hero’s’ feet; and I’ve been waiting for context ever since. Thankfully, helmer-in-chief Zack Snyder, himself, provided just that, during a sit for Conan.

He bore a gift, in the form of a full clip, which pretty much filled in the gap between the moment Bats (Ben Affleck) & Supes (Henry Cavill) literally collided, and Batman’s infamous first words (as impressed upon us, during last year’s Con season). Turns out, neither did the Bat throw the first threat, nor was Superman all that passive in the Batmobile fender bender, after all. With the line “The Bat is Dead,” we now have to get context to the Superman threat, of course (just so you see how that works).

I understand that manipulating public expectations is something of a necessity (if not warrior’s art) in the social media age, and that the DC/ Warner people may have been doing an understatedly good job at keeping speculators coming & going (and coming back for more); but there is the risk of them creating an entirely false impression of this film that might exceed the finished product. If bait-and-switch is the order of the day, the item offered better be superior to the one advertised.

The good news is that this particular switch-up up-ends the longest held impression of the film’s tone, while encouraging more recent reports/ theories regarding the adversarial nature of the meeting. Here, the risk becomes giving those on the right track too much to work with. I want to be surprised by this film; but I still have my doubts. Press junket hasn’t even really started yet, though; so more reveals to be… well, revealed.
