Seung-wan Ryoo‘s The Battleship Island (2017) movie trailer stars Joong-ki Song, Jung-min Hwang, Ji-seob So, Su-an Kim, and Jung-hyun Lee. The Battleship Island‘s plot synopsis: “The 1940s-set historical thriller tells a fictional story, yet details are drawn from real life. During the end of WWII, approximately 400-700 Korean civilians were forced to work as coal miners under Japan’s colonial rule. These forced laborers were sent to Japan to live under the harsh and brutal conditions of Hashima Island, a remote 16-acre coal-mining isle located off the coast of Nagasaki.

The battleship-shaped island would eventually become a symbol of the rapid post-war industrialization of Japan. But to many Koreans — especially those who were fortunate enough to escape — will always remember it as the “Island of Hell.” “The Battleship Island” is scheduled to open in select U.S. cities on August 4th. synopsis: During the Japanese colonial era, roughly 400 Korean people, who were forced onto Battleship Island (‘Hashima Island’) to mine for coal, attempt to escape.”

Eventhough its a fictional story World War 2 story, it seems like a good one. I recently had the displeasure of watching Bridge of Spies. The Battleship Island seems like a far better film. The scale of this film is as big as Bridge of Spies but it seems far more entertaining.  The Battleship Island seems as though it will involve the viewer on some level so that they care what happens next. Silmido was able to achieve this on multiple levels.
