BEN-HUR (2016) Movie Trailers: Jack Huston is Judah Ben-Hur in Remake

Ben-Hur Trailers. Timur Bekmambetov‘s Ben-Hur (2016) U.S. and international movie trailers star Jack HustonToby Kebbell, Rodrigo Santoro, Morgan Freeman, and Haluk BilginerBen-Hur‘s plot synopsis, based of the novel by Lew Wallace, “BEN-HUR is the epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves (Nazanin Boniadi), Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption.”

I had been waiting to see what the remake of Ben-Hur would look like, fearing a CGI monstrosity as opposed to the practical effects and gorgeous cinematography of the original film. My fears were both alleviated and brought to life by the trailers for the remake released today. The water scenes were a good use of CGI but CGI on the horse racing scenes pale in comparison to the horse race in the original film.

That was always going to be the case because reproducing the grandeur of the original horse race in today’s economy would have cost a fortune, a fortune for one scene in the film. Producers would have had to build the race track arena, populate it with extras, hire and train horses, horse racers, etc. There is no way Paramount Pictures would spend that type of money to acquire all that for a single set piece in a one-off film with no franchise potential.

Regarding the plot of the remake, they seem to have added a few new elements. If I had written this film, I would have used material from the book not included in the Charlton Heston version. There was and is a lot of un-filmed material to work with.

Ben-Hur also stars Nazanin Boniadi, Pilou Asbæk, Marwan Kenzari, Moises Arias, Yasen Atour, David Walmsley, Ayelet Zurer, Sofia Black-D’Elia, James Cosmo, and Julian Kostov.
