Benicio Del Toro’s casting in Paradise Lost answers the question of who will play Pablo Escobar in the Andrea Di Stefano directed film. “Di Stefano’s movie isn’t a biopic per se. Instead, it’s a romantic thriller about a young couple with a destructive connection to Escobar.”

On Benicio Del Toro’s casting in the film: Producer Dimitri Rassam “praised del Toro as an ideal fit for the role, calling him ‘one of the rare actors with enough charisma and range to play such a multi-faceted character as Escobar, who could be wonderfully charming yet dangerous and menacing.'”

On the structure of the film:

At the center of Paradise Lost is Nick, a surfer visits Colombia to spend time with his brother. While there, he falls for a gorgeous local named Maria. Their tender romance takes a destructive turn when he meets her uncle, Escobar.

It “will have a narrative structure in the vein of ‘The Last King of Scotland,’ weaving Nick and Maria’s romance with Nick’s ambivalent and destructive relationship with Escobar,” Rassam explained.

On the production of Paradise Lost: “Italian thesp-turned-filmmaker Andrea di Stefano (“Life of Pi”) penned the script…With a budget of about $25 million, Paradise Lost will begin filming this March in Panama. The shoot is expected to take about eleven weeks.”
