First Official Image of Cress Williams as Black Lightning
Another superhero is about to join The CW as Black Lightning is about to make his debut. Playing the titular hero is Cress Williams, which we have a first look at the actor suiting up as he joins the likes of Arrow and The Flash in the network’s next superhero series.
With production set to begin on Black Lightning, The CW and Warner Bros. Television released their first official image of Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning. The costume was made by Laura Jean Shannon, whose known for her work on Iron Man and The Jungle Book. This costume does have similarities to Nightwing and a bit of The Atom with this tech-like suit for the first African-American superhero that had his own standalone comic book series.
In the series plot, Jefferson Pierce chooses to hang up his suit for good after 30 years of being a superhero. However, both his daughters end up getting themselves in trouble causing him to be pulled back into the world of superheroes as the DC Legend Black Lightning. We aren’t sure if the show will tie together with the Arrowverse.
Speaking about the upcoming series, EP and director Salim Akil said:
I knew way too much about the world as a young boy growing up in Richmond, California. I was no stranger to violence, death, hopelessness or the feeling that no one cared about what was happening in my life. Comics were a great way for me to escape. I was about 13 when Black Lightning was created, and finally there was a Black Super Hero that gave a damn about our neighborhood and our lives. Resurrecting him at a time in our society when a sense of hope is lacking…Black Lightning will be that hope. And in updating the suit, it will signal to a new generation that it’s time to harness and release our power, and become our own Super Heroes.
