Marvel Hires Script Writer for Standalone Black Widow Film

Whether it was because of Atomic Blonde, the upcoming Red Sparrow film, or some undisclosed factor, a script for a stand-alone Black Widow film has finally been commissioned. Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow is finally getting her own Marvel film. Jac Schaeffer has been hired to write the screenplay for the Marvel Studio film. There is no word yet on what the plot-line to the film will be, whether it will be origin film based in the past or a follow-up film to the events in Avengers: Infinity War.

Joss Whedon‘s tantalizing Black Widow / Red Room snippet from Avengers: Age of Ultron was one of the highlights of that film.

And then there was the soviet-themed, fan title sequence for a Black Widow stand-alone film that was released to rave reviews.

The new Jennifer Lawrence film, Red Sparrow, must have ruffled more than a few feathers at Marvel Studios, especially since aspects of its protagonist’s past, Dominika Egorova, are similar to those of Natalia Alianovna Romanova a.k.a. Black Widow.

The last Red Sparrow movie trailer has made the film look very good and has probably shown producers at Marvel that a stand-alone Black Widow film could work. Timing seems to have always been an issue with a Black Widow film. Where to fit it in within the Marvel universe and its storylines. Scarlett Johansson had this to say about the prospect of a stand-alone Black Widow film:

I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it. We’re creatively really compatible. I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone, it’s just a case of timing at this point for both Marvel and myself. Marvel has a really huge roster. They’re looking four years ahead. I also have a lot of things that I want to do. If I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing. It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it.

It would seem that the time is right now and that Scarlett Johansson will do it.
