BLADE RUNNER 2 (2017): Barkhad Abdi Signs On To Sci-Fi Sequel

Barkhad Abdi

Barkhad Abdi signs on to the cast of Blade Runner 2. The Academy Award-nominated Captain Phillips and The Brothers Grimsby actor is the latest actor to join the sequel to the 1982 science fiction film.

Abdi boards a project that is already host to a litany of stars. Among the actors already slated to appear in the film are Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Carla Juri, and Harrison Ford, who will return as Rick Deckard, the protagonist of the original movie. It is unknown what role Abdi will play in the film and what his relation will be to the rest of the characters.

Although Blade Runner was directed by Ridley Scott, the Academy Award-nominated director will not be helming the sequel this time around. Instead, Sicario‘s Denis Villeneuve will be directing the movie:

The Blade Runner sequel is set several decades after the 1982 original, with Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role as Rick Deckard. The film is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Story details have still not yet been revealed.

Barkhad Abdi starred earlier this year in The Brother Grimsby opposite Mark Strong and Sacha Baron Cohen. He also recently appeared alongside Helen Mirren and the late Alan Rickman in Gavin Hood’s military thriller Eye in the Sky, available today on Blu-ray and DVD.
