Blade Runner 2049 Trailer 3

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the third movie trailer for Blade Runner 2049 (2017). I have been waiting to warm up to the sequel to Blade Runner. I have seen the numerous images released for the film and both trailers. After watching this third trailer, I am still not looking forward to seeing this film. Science fiction may be my favorite film genre. Blade Runner 2049 seems as though it is science-lite. From other science fiction films that I have watched and science fiction novels that I have read, Blade Runner 2049 seems as though it will be more style and visual flare than narrative substance.

Here is an example: The replicant decanting room, shown in two or the three trailers for Blade Runner 2049. Why create an entire room, wasting all those resources for a room that decants a single replicant at a time? In looks nice, the shot is good-looking and centered in the frame but that’s it. A scientist, even an scientist that saw him or herself as an artist, wouldn’t waste resources on a room like that. This is especially true since replicants die 3 years 364 days after being born in that room.

In a Michael Bay film, style and visual flare over narrative substance works. The viewer goes into the theater knowing they are going to get that from Bay. Viewers were not expecting or hoping for that from a Blade Runner sequel, a sequel to one of the best scifi films ever made. That looks like what they have been given though.

The blood and the violence in this trailer are cool but where is the meat on the bone? The flashy stuff is the icing but where is the cake?

Blade Runner 2049‘s plot synopsis: “Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.”

Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto.
