The apes were triumphant. Rise of the Planet of the Apes premiered in the Number One spot at the box office this weekend with $54 Million. The Smurfs were Second with $21 Million. Cowboys & Aliens was Third with $15.7 Million. The Change-Up premiered in Fourth Place with $13.5 Million. Captain America: The First Avenger was Fifth with $13 Million for $143 Million so far. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Crazy, Stupid, Love., Friends with Benefits, Horrible Bosses, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon so far.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a 2011 American science fiction film loosely based on the 1963 novel Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle. The film is directed by Rupert Wyatt . It is a reboot of the Planet of the Apes series that will act as a foundation with an origin story for a new film series. Its premise is similar to the fourth film in the original series, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), but it is not a direct remake in that it does not fit into that series’ continuity.
