Box Office: June 2-4, 2017

Wonder Woman premiered in the Number One spot at the box office over the weekend with $100.5 Million. Worldwide, Wonder Woman has already brought in $223 Million. Wonder Woman also set a record for biggest opening ever for a female director (Patty Jenkins). From all those that have seen this film say that Wonder Woman is the best DC in years (including Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). That is a low bar to circumvent. Those positive comments are not complaints per se in my opinion. When your movie isn’t terrible, that is not something that should be celebrated, especially when you consider the films that came before it.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie premiered in Second Place with $23.5. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was Third with $21.6 Million for $114.6 Million so far. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was Fourth with 9.7 Million for $333.2 Million so far. World-wide, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has made $817.3 Million.

Baywatch was Fifth with $18.1 Million. Baywatch dropped 54% of its U.S. audience in its second week at the box office. The stars of Baywatch are doing everything that they can in foreign markets to put backsides in theater seats (to up the profit bottom line of Baywatch in the hopes of a green-light sequel). That includes Baywatch star Alexandra Daddario and the outfit that she choose to wear while promoting the Baywatch in Berlin before Baywatch‘s premiere there this weekend (click to enlarge).

Alien: Covenant, Everything, Everything, Snatched, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword rounded out the Top Ten respectively.

I was able to successfully predict the placement of all Top Five films this weekend, which was a first since I began the Now In-Theater column months back.

Wonder Woman is a 2017 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is the fourth installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film is directed by Patty Jenkins, with a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and a story by Heinberg, Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs. Gal Gadot stars as the titular character with Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen and Elena Anaya in supporting roles.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is a 2017 American 3D computer-animated superhero comedy film based on the children’s novel series Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. The film was produced by DreamWorks Animation and Scholastic Entertainment with animation production provided by Mikros Image Montreal. It was directed by David Soren, written by Nicholas Stoller, and stars the voices of Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Thomas Middleditch, Nick Kroll, Jordan Peele and Kristen Schaal.

Next week sees the release of: The Mummy, It Comes At Night, Megan Leavy, My Cousin Rachel, and Night School. Find more of my predictions in my weekly Now In-Theater column. Even with its drop off next weekend, Wonder Woman should still be able to hold off Tom Cruise‘s The Mummy for the Number One spot at the box office. It all depends on how big the audience drop off is for Wonder Woman in its second week of release.
