MIT students win the jackpot this weekend. 21, in its first week of release, earned $23.7 Million on 2,648 screens. Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! was Number Two with $17.4 Million on 3,826 screens but lost 29.1% of its audience from last weekend. Superhero Movie premiered in third place with $9.5 Million. If this movie had gotten the Number One spot like Meet the Spartans had its premiere weekend, we would eventually see a torrent of spoof movies. We still might. Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns was Fourth over the weekend with $7.76 Million. Shutter, 10,000 BC, Stop-Loss (a film that I thought would perform better, premiered in Eighth Place with $4.5 Million), College Road Trip and The Bank Job rounded out the top ten respectively. The last major premiere of the week, Run Fat Boy Run, took in $2.39 Million for the Thirteenth spot.

  • Haven’t we already seen a torrent of spoof movies?

Well, this one was done by the Naked Gun and Scary Movie people, which do tread the same ground as those horrid Spartan Movie guys but those are just made to mimic as many movie scenes as they could. I guess I called it wrong on 21, but then again it was advertised heavily, I guess adults finally decided to go see a movie.

  • Or its simply that Horton doesn’t have the “legs” to be Number One three weeks in a row.
