Box Office

Box Office: October 13-15, 2017: HAPPY DEATH DAY, BLADE RUNNER 2049, THE FOREIGNER, & More

Jessica Rothe Happy Death Day

Box Office: October 13-15, 2017

Happy Death Day premiered in the Number One spot at the box office over the weekend with $26.5 Million. Many were not expecting this turn events. “The power of the ring”…I mean Halloween…will not be denied. If Happy Death Day did this well, next week’s major Halloween release, Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, is going to do very well.

Blade Runner 2049 was Second at the box office over the weekend with $15.1 Million. Audiences don’t seem to be warming to the high-end, science fiction film but the film is on track for cult film status. Critically-successful follow-up films as few and far between.

The Foreigner premiered in Third Place with $12.8 Million. It was Fourth with $6 Million for $314.9 Million so far. World-wide, It has made $630.6 Million. The Mountain Between Us was Fifth with $5.6 Million.

American Made, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The LEGO Ninjago Movie, My Little Pony: The Movie, Victoria and Abdul rounded out the top ten respectively.

The films in the Top Ten that opened this weekend at the box office:

Happy Death Day is a 2017 American slasher film directed by Christopher B. Landon and written by Scott Lobdell. It stars Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard. The film was produced by Jason Blum through his Blumhouse Productions banner. It follows a college student who is murdered on her birthday, and who then begins reliving the day over and over again; at that point, she sets out to stop her death and find the killer.

The Foreigner is a 2017 action thriller film directed by Martin Campbell and written by David Marconi, based on the 1992 novel The Chinaman by Stephen Leather. The British-Chinese co-production stars Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan, Michael McElhatton, Liu Tao, Charlie Murphy, Orla Brady and Katie Leung, and follows a businessman who seeks revenge for the death of his daughter.

Next week sees the release of: Geostorm, Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, Only The Brave, The Snowman, and a plethora of other mainstream and independent films. Find my predictions on these releases in the weekly Now In-Theater column. A preview: as this week at the box office has proven, U.S. theater-goers have a taste for the macabre during the month of October. With that in mind, Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween should be Number One at the box office next weekend.
