CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 Will Fight MAN OF STEEL 2 at Box Office in May 2016

Batman Superman Captain America

Captain America 3 opening coterminous with Man of Steel 2. It has been announced that Captain America 3 will be going head-to-head with Batman vs. Superman on May 6, 2016. Marvel Studio and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures had staked out the May 6, 2016 release before Man of Steel 2 was moved onto that date from its 2015 spot.

Many would call this a bold move by Marvel but that would be inaccurate. It was Warner Bros. that threw down the gauntlet against the formerly unrevealed Marvel film first. Analyst think one of the films will blink and move as they both will cannibalize each others overall take on opening weekend.

Apparently, it wouldn’t be Marvel. “Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently said that they would not back down from that release date”.

If I were a betting man, I would say Man of Steel 2 will eventually change release dates (again) since Captain America will have three current film incarnations backing it compared to Batman vs. Superman‘s single incarnation (Nolan’s Batman films do not count since he nor Christian Bale are returning).

By all indications, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be a hit at the box office and Captain America 3 will ride that success into its May 6, 2016 opening weekend.

More on how box office is a major factor in this head-to-head bout:

[Analysts] believe Winter Soldier, with Chris Evans returning in the title role, will benefit from the same halo effect from The Avengers that Iron Man 3 and sequel Thor: The Dark World enjoyed, as well as firmly establishing Captain America as a standalone franchise.

The first, Captain America: The First Avenger, took in $371 million worldwide, compared to $668 million for Man of Steel. However, Winter Soldier has a shot at matching the $641 million grossed worldwide by fellow Marvel sequel Thor: The Dark World late last year.

Anthony Russo, Joe Russo‘s Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Frank Grillo, Maximiliano Hernández, Anthony Mackie, Robert Redford, Cobie Smulders, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Dominic Cooper, Stan Lee, Jenny Agutter, Alan Dale, and Emily VanCamp.

Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel 2 (Untitled Superman-Batman Project) stars Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, and Laurence Fishburne.
