COCO (2017) Teaser Trailer: Disney’s Latest Examines a Young Boy’s Family History
Coco Teaser Trailer
Lee Unkrich, Adrian Molina‘s Coco (2017) teaser trailer stars Benjamin Bratt, Gael GarcÃa Bernal, Renee Victor, and Anthony Gonzalez. Coco‘s plot synopsis: “Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael Garcia Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.”
When I watched this trailer, the first thing that I thought of was Kubo and the Two Strings. In Coco, however, the singing and music will play a primary role in the narrative. The film seems to center on the Mexican holiday Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead).
The Land of the Dead is a far more colorful place than most people would have imagined. Since this is a Disney / Pixar film, however, one would have expected nothing less.
The nationality of the protagonist could not be appropriate considering the current political landscape of the United States of America. A big budget Disney film starring Mexicans is bound to make more than a few waves in the week leading up to next Thanksgiving. It will hilarious as pro-border wall, xenophobic Americans take their children to a film starring a race and a culture they would love to block from setting foot in America.
