COLONIA (2015) Movie Trailer: Emma Watson Infiltrates Cult to Save Daniel Brühl

Colonia Trailer

Colonia Trailer. Florian Gallenberger‘s Colonia (2015) movie trailer stars Emma WatsonDaniel Brühl, and Michael NyqvistColonia‘s plot synopsis: “A young woman’s desperate search for her abducted boyfriend that draws her into the infamous Colonia Dignidad, a sect nobody ever escaped from.”

Colonia looks like a very interesting slice of history that most of us haven’t read up on. Entangled in the Chilean military coup by General Pinochet of Salvador Allende’s presidency, our heroes find themselves trapped in a dangerous sea-change on the streets of Chile that no one but the military and Pinochet is safe from. The country is changing rapidly, immediately, and Pinochet’s secret police is everywhere, rounding up dissidents, cracking down on objectors or anyone who looks suspicious in the slightest. Daniel Brühl’s character is one of those citizens, and is taken away violently from his love (played by Emma Watson) and shipped to “Colonia Dignidad” – a camp that brainwashes people into accepting this new leader, effusing a cult-like mentality.

This is where the film begins to feel like something we haven’t seen before, or rarely do. Whereas the above paragraph describes a fairly typical historical drama, a slice of history (granted, this one isn’t touched upon often, if ever, which automatically sparks my curiosity ) played out for two hours – there’s a seemingly typical genre element that enters the mix. Emma Watson’s character infiltrates the Colonia Dignidad to find her husband and escape. That seems like a genre film, a thriller with elements of action and intensity we usually find in movies without the weight or heft of history. It’s an incredibly welcome change, I must say, I’m just really curious to see how that feels. We’ll all find out soon, as Colonia just premiered at TIFF and will garner a U.S. release date any minute.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
