Four New Character Posters for Crimson Peak Have Been Released. The new film by Guillermo del Toro has four new character posters. Crimson Peak‘s core cast is made of Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, and Charlie Hunnam, all of whom now have their own, personal one-sheets.
One of the trailers that was screened before my Jurassic World outing this past weekend was for Crimson Peak, del Toro’s latest gothic, haunted mansion horror movie. It really worked on the big screen, and actually grabbed my attention for the first time. I really think this could be good, but as with all horror movies – I’m trying my best to keep my expectations low.
What I’m hoping for from movie is one of two things: 1) Please don’t simply, only be that haunted house movie where whatever thing it is you’re chasing, is part of you, or is you, and the once terrifying threat is actually an understandable, relatable thing or person (see Mama, for example), or 2)be that thing, but be the best possible version of that thing.
Essentially, I’m tired of of our modern horror taking the wind out of its sails by curtailing the mean spiritedness once found in this genre. Be mean, be shitty to us, be violent and be unapologetic. If this is more a gothic tale about exploring the past, whatever happened in the history of this house, then fine – be that thing, but don’t pretend to be a serious horror film. If del Toro somehow can fuse both those things together, he’ll truly solidify himself as the master I always thought he could be. For context – just so it doesn’t seem like I’m being too harsh on him, or don’t appreciate his work – I absolutely love Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth, and was hugely entertained by Pacific Rim.
