Tom Hiddleston is replacing Benedict Cumberbatch in Crimson Peak. He will star in Guillermo del Toro’s gothic film. The thriller, which will also feature Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam, the latter of whom is now known as the new Christian Grey. The project has set a start date of January 2014 to begin shooting.

Universal Pictures will have the option to come aboard as a finance partner at a later date. Legendary, which covered 75 percent of the budget for del Toro’s summer smash Pacific Rim, will produce and provide financing.

The gothic horror story centers on a young author named Edith Cushin (Wasikowska) who discovers her husband might not be who he appears to be. Details on who is playing whom were not revealed. Del Toro wrote the script with Matthew Robbins; Lucinda Coxon did a rewrite.

Cumberbatch exited Crimson Peak in late August. He most recently has signed on for The Lost City of Z but inside sources claim that his exit was not due to project conflicts. He is not the first to exit the project as del Toro had to previously replace Emma Stone with Wasikowska due to scheduling conflicts.

Hiddleston, who played Loki in The Avengers, is set to appear in November’s Marvel sequel Thor: The Dark World. The actor was also cast in Muppets Most Wanted, which has set a March 2014 release date. The casting switchup gives way to a reunion for Hiddleston and Wasikowska, who recently starred in the Cannes Film Festival premiere Only Lovers Left Alive.
