Disney has begun preparation on Cruella, a live-action adaptation of Creulla de Vil. This villain was first made famous in Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians but became a Disney icon with the 1961 animated movie. Aline Brosh McKenna has been hired to pen Cruella, which will bring the dog-fur-loving fashionista to life.
McKenna will produce the film with Andrew Gunn, who previously produced Sky High and Bedtime Stories for Disney. McKenna already worked for Disney by penning the Cinderella script. The screenwriter, who may be best-know for adapting The Devil Wears Prada, also worked on Annie, which is now casting.
This is not Cruella’s first live-action incarnation. Glenn Close memorably played the character in 1996’s 101 Dalmatians and the 2000 sequel, 102 Dalmatians. Glenn Close will continue her close relationship with Cruella, this time acting as an executive producer. The basic theme of Cruella will involve the villain locked away in the dog pound.
Cruella would be Disney’s latest live-action take on one of its classic animated films. In addition to Alice and Maleficent, Disney is making Cinderella, which just began principal photography with Kenneth Branagh in the director’s chair.
The live action adaptations have proved to have box-office success. Alice in Wonderland (2010) starring Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp has earned over $1 billion dollars in box office sales. The sequel for Alice in Wonderland was announced this past May 2013 with James Bobin directing. While Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) is not a Disney film, it still brought in close to $400 million in box office revenue.
Angelina Jolie will star in Maleficent, which is scheduled for release in 2014.
Cinderella will be released in theaters on March 13, 2015. Principal photography for Cinderella began on September 23, 2013 with Lily James starring.
