The Dark Tower to Possibly Transition From Film to TV

Ever since The Dark Tower started production, the film has become one of Hollywood’s most ambitious projects to date. With the franchise becoming a series of films, there are those who wonder if a TV adaptation will be made. Well, it turns out it may actually happen.

Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman talked with Entertainment Weekly on the status of The Dark Tower TV series, revealing it’s still in the works. The show will adapt Stephen King‘s fourth book in the series, Wizard and Glass, which acts as a prequel to the series focusing on the origins of Roland. The TV series may feature the return of Idris Elba as Roland Deschain AKA The Gunslinger from the upcoming film. Tom Taylor could also return to play Jake Chambers. Since the show will give us a background on Roland, we can expect a younger actor to play the role with Elba and Taylor serving as a framing device for the series. It’s also possible that we may get to see Matthew McConaughey as The Man in Black, unless they choose someone else as the character can change faces.

“In the movie, Roland is suffering tremendous loss. The most concrete, personal, existential heartbreak a character can have,” Goldsman told EW. “If the movie chronicles his final reach toward hope again, the TV show is the loss of that hope.”

Currently, the show is looking to run for 10-13 episodes for it’s first season, aiming to air on a cable network. The series is looking to be released on 2018 with the film’s director Nikolaj Arcel and co-writer Anders Thomas Jensen to write the script for the series with a different showrunner to lead it.

To give us a peak at the show, Media Rights Capital has created a map of the Barony of Mejis, where the series will take place. What do you guys think of a TV series based on The Dark Tower? The Dark Tower will release in theaters on February 17, 2017.
