DEADPOOL (2016): $12.7 Million Thursday Night Box Office Record Set for R-Rated Film

Ryan Reynolds Deadpool

Deadpool Sets Thursday Night Record for an R-rated film. Deadpool is landing with a bang both critically and financially. Last night’s premiere of Deadpool was a resounding success, bringing in $12.7 Million in a single evening. That bets R-Rated The Hangover Part II‘s $10.4 Million Thursday night take and Fifty Shades of Grey‘s $8.6 Million Thursday night take in previous years.

With Thursday night’s take, Deadpool is starting out on the right foot for a large box office debut this weekend. Some believe that though Thursday’s night numbers were good, that there are other milestones that must be met and surpassed. Deadpool‘s Friday numbers will be even more important to the film’s success this weekend, as was indicated by American Sniper‘s $30.4 million Friday night and Fifty Shades of Grey‘s $30. 2 Friday night following their Thursday night premieres.

Both films went on to win their premiere weekends.

If Deadpool does well this weekend, it bodes very well for the future of R-rated superhero films and R-rated films in general.

Tim Miller‘s Deadpool stars Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand, Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Rachel Sheen, Andre Tricoteux, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Paul Lazenby, Sean Quan, Andre Tricoteux, Taylor Hickson, Jed Rees, and Ben Wilkinson.

Deadpool‘s plot synopsis: “Based upon Marvel Comics most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.”
