THE DEFENDERS: Series Won’t Lead LUKE CAGE into Season Two [Netflix]

The Defenders Won’t Set Up Season Two For Luke Cage

We know that the four superheroes in the The Defenders come together for a common cause, but eventually they all end up leading their own crusades. The same goes for Luke Cage (Mike Colter), so viewers shouldn’t be expecting that the miniseries would set up season two.

Marvel revealed that each of the heroes’ problems that were faced in Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are all connected by one entity, perhaps by Sigourney Weaver’s Alexandra. However, it seems like whatever the threat is won’t carry on to each of the individual series. When Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker was asked about whether the events of The Defenders would lead into Luke Cage season two, he told Mashable that it won’t happen as the miniseries is being treated as a standalone story.

It’s like the Wu-Tang. You’ve got the Wu-Tang Clan record, which is what The Defenders represents. Say that Luke Cage is Ghostface, say that Jessica Jones is Method Man. It’s like they’re all kind of part of the same clique, but each record sounds different. So that’s really the analogy I would make, is that they acknowledge each other, but they’re not really dependent on each other. But because it’s the same crews, and the same family, the same feel, it’s all interconnected — but it doesn’t mean that one really dictates the direction of the other.

So if Luke Cage goes his own way after The Defenders is over, will the same go for the rest of the team? Perhaps a few of the shows will close the book on the threat that takes place in the miniseries while others may still have ties to them. What do you think?
