Jonás Cuarón‘s Desierto (2016) movie trailer stars Gael García Bernal, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Alondra Hidalgo, Diego Cataño, and Marco Pérez. Desierto‘s plot synopsis: “What begins as a hopeful journey to seek a better life becomes a harrowing and primal fight for survival when a deranged, rifle-toting vigilante chases a group of unarmed men and women through the treacherous U.S.-Mexican border. In the harsh, unforgiving desert terrain, the odds are stacked firmly against them as they continuously discover there’s nowhere to hide from the unrelenting, merciless killer.”

I didn’t know the premise of this film when I began watching the trailer. The plot quickly revealed itself and it was very surprising. It was troubling as well, considering the anti-Mexican / immigrant sentiment that has been stirred up in the current Unites States government election cycle. With that in mind, this film is far more powerful and dangerous than it would normally be. Desierto might actually inspire border protection zealots to take some of the actions in this film. I hope that doesn’t happen.

That being said, Desierto looks like a good thriller film. Or should this be called a horror film? Desierto seems like The Most Dangerous Game set in the desert.
