DIE HARD 6: Action Series Heads to Tokyo, New Writer for DIE HARDEST

Bruce Willis A Good Day to Die Hard

Die Hard 6 in Tokyo with new writer on-board. Die Hard 6, possibly titled Die Hardest, will have John McClane (Bruce Willis) traveling to Tokyo, Japan. British screenwriter Ben Trebilcook is currently writing a treatment for Die Hard 6. “Details are scarce at the moment, but we know that the story begins in New York, before moving to Tokyo, which will be the predominant location.”

More on how the characters will be handled in the treatment and possible script for the film:

“It is extremely faithful to the franchise and characters and is a natural progression. It’s also a very plausible storyline,” he told us.

Clarifying the current status of Die Hard 6, Trebilcook added, “Getting Larry’s support was great, but there are many hurdles to leap yet and two of those are called Bruce Willis and [producer] Alex Young. [There’s] the possibility producers might go back and find some other source material to base the next one on, like they did with the first and second. Mine though, I feel it could be the Rocky Balboa of the Die Hard franchise.”

Rocky Balboa was the concluding chapter of the Rocky film franchise and the second best Rocky film behind the first film. This reference is bold for two reasons: 1.) its alluding to the fact that Die Hard 6 may be be as good as Rocky Balboa. Rocky Balboa was good because of the script and the acting. Die Hard is an action franchise or it is now. The Die Hard films, not counting the first and the third film, have not been particularly strong on their scripts or their acting. 2.) If Die Hardest is successful, the studio will want another Die Hard (think The Fast and the Furious franchise). They will not want to throw away all that name recognition.

The chances of Ben Trebilcook’s treatment being used as the basis of the eventual script are not strong though when his track record is taken into account:

The IMDB is not always to be trusted, but, the site says Trebilcook also wrote early drafts of both Die Hard 4 and Mission Impossible 3, neither of which were produced. He also has yet to have a script put into production, though it seems Knockout will be the first. All this means the chances of Die Hardest being the 6th Die Hard are probably equal to the chances of it not being.
