Disney’s Acquisition is Not Affecting Fox’s New Silver Surfer, X-Force, & Other X-Men Universe Films

Fox’s Silver Surfer and X-Men Films Are Continuing Unabated

The acquisition of 21 Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company is not slowing down Fox’s ambitious for its Marvel properties. Apparently at Fox, they “have way more in development and production in Marvel IP than at any point in the history of the studio.”

What is unclear is if this is a reaction to the acquisition by Disney or if they were gearing up their Marvel film productions all along. A film agent who has numerous clients that work on the Marvel movies that Fox creates offered this perspective on the situation: “They have to proceed as business as usual in case the merger doesn’t go through. It’s a unique position to be in.”

One of the potential biggest Marvel films that Fox is developing is Silver Surfer. A Silver Surfer stand-alone film is currently being written at Fox by Brian K. Vaughn.

Regardless of quality in some cases, Fox has left its mark on The X-Men film franchise. Soon, if the merger goes through, The X-Men film franchise will be in the hands and fall under the guidance of Marvel Studios. Before that happens though, Fox is barreling full steam ahead with its X-Men universe films. X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be released on November 2, 2018 and Deadpool 2 will be released on May 18, 2018.

In addition to those two Fox-based, X-Men universe films, Fox is moving forward with X-Force, the Deadpool spin-off film that will begin shooting in October 2018. In 2019, Fox is planning to release three X-Men universe films, one of which might possibly be X-Force. If that is true, X-Force would be released towards the end of 2019 if principal photography is finished quickly enough. X-Force would join The New Mutants, which is being released on February 22, 2019. The latter film will undergo reshoots this summer to insert an undisclosed new character.

Another three undisclosed X-Men universe films are planned to be released by Fox in 2020.

Gambit is most-likely one of those 2020, X-Men universe films. Gambit still does not have a director yet, though its script did pick up a new draft, which will be completed (and handed in) in March 2018.
