Disney’s D23 Expo Highlights (Live-Action): CAPTAIN AMERICA 3, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5, & More

Disney live action film news and film announcements from the 2015 D23 Expo. During the middle of the 2015 Disney Expo, the chairman of Walt Disney Studios Alan Horn was excited to reveal more information regarding the lineup of all the upcoming films by Disney, including the ones from Marvel and Lucasfilms.

  • Doctor Strange: The president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, began the panel by discussing the Marvel movies and started off with him and a video of Benedict Cumberbatch telling the audience that it will be weird in a good way. The film is set to be released in Fall 2016
  • Captain America: Civil War: Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie took the stage to show a clip of the movie that featured an appearance of Ant-Man. The film is set to be released on May 6th, 2016.

DISNEY

  • The Finest Hours: Based on a true story of a man who was lost at sea, the film will star Chris Pine and will be released on January 2016
  • The Jungle Book: Director Jon Favreau promised that this will be a mixture of the original Rudyard Kipling story and the 1967 Disney animated feature. The crowd gave a standing ovation to the clip that was revealed, that featured Bill Murray as Baloo singing Bare Necessities, and it will be released on April 15th, 2016.
  • Alice Through the Looking Glass: The sequel to the 2010 blockbuster revealed a new character, Time, played by Sacha Baron Cohen. The film is set to be released on May 27th, 2016.
  • Pete’s Dragon: Just a little reminder that they’re still planning on remaking the 1977 feature with an August 12th, 2016 release date.
  • The Queen of Katwe: A new movie directed by Mira Nair with a 2016 release date
  • Beauty and the Beast: Emma Watson shared a video showing her excitement for the film, while Luke Evans and Josh Gad came on stage to sing the Gaston song. The film is set to be released on March 17th, 2017.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales: Captain Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp), came onto the stage to reveal that Orlando Bloom will make a comeback as Will Turner in the fifth installment and that Javier Bardem was added to the cast as Captain Salazar. The film is set to be released on July 7th, 2017

LUCASFILMS

  • Star Wars Episode IX: This section of the panel began by confirming that the director of the ninth installment will be Colin Trevorrow and it is set to be out in 2019.
  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: Director Gareth Edwards shared a video message to say that the movie will take place in between Episode III and IV, along with revealing the cast. It is set to be released on December 16th, 2016.
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens: JJ Abrams, along with some of the cast that includes Harrison Ford, discussed more about the film, while also presenting a new Drew Struzan poster for the film. Afterwards, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that there will be a new themed “Star Wars Land” that will be at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Episode VII will be released at the end of this year on December 18th.
