DOCTOR STRANGE (2016): Cinematographer Describes Film as a Dark Fantasia

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange to Be a Dark Film Reminiscent to Disney’s Fantasia. With production set to start rolling during November in the United Kingdom, there has been some intriguing details on what Doctor Strange would be like, according to it’s cinematographer Ben Davis.

Speaking with Screen Daily, Ben Davis said that Doctor Strange “has a very psychedelic grounding” and that it’s “not your typical Marvel action movie.” He then compared the film to a timeless Disney animated film. “Most of the work within it is about other dimensions,” he elaborated. “And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.”

Ben Davis later added how Doctor Strange will be different from the rest of Marvel Cinematic Universe as far as visuals and the superhero genre. “There’s a lot of previsualisation, and there’s a lot of work which is very hard,” he continued. He goes on to say:

You look at it and you see the imagery that they’ve created for it and you think, ‘well how the hell do we shoot that!?’ because it’s all sort of Escher stuff. It’s all very out there. I can’t really say much more about it, I’m afraid. But I think it’ll be really interesting, and it’s a very dark movie, I’m pleased to say. [DOPs] always love the word ‘dark’. The trouble is that most producers don’t like dark. Mostly you get into [Digital Intermediate process] and people don’t seem to like dark anymore!

So it looks like Doctor Strange will be a whole lot different from the other films that Marvel Studios released so far. What do you guys think?

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tilda Swinton, Doctor Strange is scheduled for release on November 4th, 2016.
