Joaquin Phoenix in Final Talks for Doctor Strange Role. Joaquin Phoenix can add superhero on his list of achievements next to his three-time Oscar nominations. Collider reported that the actor is in final negotiations with Marvel Studios to play Doctor Strange in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It was rumored back in July that Joaquin Phoenix was in talks with Marvel Studios to play Doctor Strange, but this is the first report of a deal being finalized for the forthcoming Marvel film. If Phoenix does get the role, this would be a huge deal for Marvel Studios since the actor has been well-known for his famous roles in films like Gladiator, Walk the Line, The Master, and his recent film Her.
The character was briefly mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier when Agent Jasper Sitwell said Stephen Strange as one of the people that Hydra was targeting next. After talking with ComicBookResources.com in April, Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige confirmed that Doctor Strange does exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“We’re definitely working very hard on trying to figure that out and get the right team in place on that,” Feige told CBR News. So it seems that Doctor Strange will definitely be in MCU and we may finally know who plays him.
Scott Derrickson, who was handpicked by Marvel Studios back in June, will direct the Doctor Strange film. Screenwriters Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer were attached to write the film until June when Jon Spaihts was in negotiations to rewrite the script, according to Deadline. Other actors who were in the running to play the magician-turned-superhero were Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jared Leto, and Jack Huston. The film will start shooting in at CineEurope in Barcelona in Spring 2015, according to Total Film. The film is scheduled to release on July 8, 2016.
