Star Wars has just found it’s new Lando Calrissian as Donald Glover has been chosen to play him in the upcoming Han Solo spin-off film. The Atlanta star will be portraying a younger version of the character in the film, which focuses on the origins of Han Solo.
Lucasfilms made the announcement early Friday that Donald Glover landed the highly coveted role of Lando Calrissian. The character will be a part of the untitled Han Solo standalone film, which comes out in summer 2018. The role, which was famously played by Billy Dee Williams, will have the Rebel Alliance general meet with the young Han Solo, who is played by Alden Ehrenreich. The film will show the early years these two thieves-turned-heroes and takes place before the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
In a statement, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller gave their support in the casting and expressed their excitement to work with him. The directing duo said, “We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us… These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
