Doug Liman directing Justice League Dark and Official Team Roster
Doug Liman has left the director’s chair of Gambit to direct Justice League Dark. Since no one has heard anything about Gambit developments for months yet DC is racing to get Justice League films into cineplexes, something had to give. First reported in Variety, Liman leaving Gambit was a “mutual split” between the studio and Liman.
The film incarnation of Justice League Dark will consist of five members: John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon. Each of these characters have some pretty unique abilities. Skipping their origin stories, like with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, will cause a narrative problem in the film. People unfamiliar with the characters will not know what makes each character tick, their backgrounds, or what they can do (initially). Lucky for you, we do.
John Constantine (From the Keenu Reeves film and canceled NBC TV Show)
Constantine is a working class occult detective and con man stationed in London. He is known for his endless cynicism, deadpan snarking, ruthless cunning and constant chain smoking, but is also a passionate humanist driven by a heartfelt desire to do some good in his life.
Alex Olsen, a scientist, is caught in a lab explosion…Olsen is physically altered by chemicals and the forces within the swamp.
Swamp Thing can inhabit and animate vegetable matter anywhere, including alien plants, even sentient ones, and construct it into a body for himself. As a result, bodily attacks mean little to him. He can easily regrow damaged or severed body parts, and can even transport himself across the globe by leaving his current form, transferring his consciousness to a new form grown from whatever vegetable matter is present in the location he wishes to reach.
Swamp Thing possesses superhuman strength. Swamp Thing can control any form of plant life.
[Boston Brand, a former a circus trapeze artist, who] performed under the name Deadman, a stage persona including a red costume and white corpse makeup. When Brand is murdered during a trapeze performance by a mysterious assailant known only as the Hook, his spirit is given the power to possess any living being by a Hindu god named “Rama Kushna,” in order to search for his murderer and obtain justice.
Zatanna Zatara is the daughter of magician Giovanni Zatara who appeared in Golden Age comic books and Sindella, a member of the mystical Homo magi race.
Zatanna is one of the most powerful sorceresses in the DC universe, whose abilities are apparently genetic. As a tribute to her father and as a focal point, she usually casts spells by speaking verbal commands backwards.
Zatanna has proven herself able to call upon tarot reading for insight or divination….She has used her powers to command elemental forces, heal, transmute and transmogrify objects, manipulate minds, and attack her opponents with energy blasts. Zatanna is a skilled illusionist, showgirl and stage magician even without resorting to her innate magical powers.
Etrigan the Demon
Etrigan, son of the demon Belial, is summoned by the wizard Merlin, his half-brother. Unable to gain the creature’s secrets, he bonds the demon with Jason Blood, a knight in King Arthur’s Camelot. This renders Jason immortal, though at times he considers this either a penance or a curse.
Centuries later, Jason Blood resurfaces in recent times, becoming a prominent demonologist in Gotham City. Jason is called to the crypt of Merlin and discovers a poem that changes him into Etrigan.
Etrigan is a muscular humanoid creature with orange or yellow skin, horns, red eyes, and pointed, webbed ears.
He has above superhuman strength (mystically enhanced) to the degree that he can stand against other powerhouses such as Superman, Wonder Woman, and Lobo. He has a high degree of resistance to injury and can project hellfire from his body; usually from his mouth. He has a very high command of magic. Other powers include mystically enhanced fangs and claws, enhanced senses, super speed, agility, telepathy, energy blasts, and precognition. His sadomasochistic nature allows him to enjoy pain as if it were pleasure, making him generally fearless in the face of combat and torture. His healing factor can handle an incredible amount of damage, allowing him to recover from wounds that have removed large sections of his body.
Go was a great ensemble film. That gives me hope for Justice League Dark. From the angle of handling multiple storylines and motivations coterminous, Liman has already proven himself. Since Michale Gilio is writing the film’s script, no plot details are available.
