EVEREST (2015) Movie Trailer: An Impressive Cast is Stuck on Everest

Everest TrailerBaltasar Kormákur‘s Everest (2015) movie trailer stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal. Everest‘s plot synopsis: “A climbing expedition on Mt. Everest is devastated by a severe snow storm.”

This is quite the cast. There is an impressive amount of talent brought together on this project – at least on first sight. The acting talent is there, but a closer look at the director reveals that he’s done nothing but hacky action films like Contraband (2012 ) and 2 Guns (2013 ). The writer – or rather, the fact that there are numerous writers – doesn’t inspire confidence, either. If I recall correctly, this project has undergone quite the transformation in the past few years, with Christian Bale attached at one point – and generating an intense amount of excitement in me. Still, it’s the writing that will determine this film’s fate. It seems to be quite beautifully and terrifyingly shot, which the IMAX screen could certainly take advantage of. But if the story sucks, and our characters are as flatly defined as “I have kids” and “I just want to make it to the top”, then they’ll never get the chance to win us over. Then again, I was a huge Cliffhanger fan when I was younger. This looks far more realistic, but somehow broad and uninteresting. Maybe I just wish there was a suitcase full of money these guys were all after.

In any case, I highly recommend Touching The Void (2003), which is based on a true story of a climb gone wrong. It dramatically reenacts the whole tale and grips you tightly until the very end. There’s even a shot in this trailer where the climbers in both films are camped out in the exact same place. Hopefully Everest keeps it as grounded, dramatic, and realistic (as Touching The Void), and less flashy, sentimental and Hollywood (like those title cards blaring “LOVE. COURAGE. PAIN.” at you). That doesn’t really grab any of us, does it?

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
