FIFTY SHADES OF GREY (2014): Casting Decisions Post-Labor Day?

Fifty Shades Of Grey Logo

Major casting decisions for Fifty Shades of Grey are starting to heat up. There are numerous rumors circulating that major decisions for Fifty Shades of Grey (2014) will be decided for the two leads, Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. The Universal and Focus Features’ adaptation of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey has been getting closer to deciding who fits their frisky lead roles.

Sources tell Variety that in recent weeks four actresses have been pushed to become top choices to play Steele: Alicia Vikander, Imogen Poots, Shailene Woodley, and Dakota Johnson. Sources say there is no front-runner right now and more actresses are still being seen to audition. These four actresses however have been circulating on short-lists and have been mentioned as favorites by director Sam Taylor-Johnson and studio executives.

Production for the film is set to begin at the end of October of this year. It’s unclear if Woodley’s commitment to Divergent and its possible sequels would keep her from this film. There is also the prerequisite publicity for Divergent and her most recent project The Spectacular Now to consider.

For Fifty Shades of Grey‘s male lead, Christian Grey, Twitchfilm reported earlier this week that the studio expressed interest in Charlie Hunnman, who stars on the television show Sons of Anarchy. Members of the Hunman camp deny the story, claiming no offers have been delivered. It has also been said that Hunman already passed on the role, but may now be reconsidering and is expected to meet with executives over the weekend.

The studio has also met with Magic City thespian Christian Cooke and Divergent actor Theo James, but has decided to go older, looking for an actor in his early 30s instead of mid-to-late 20s.

While the studios have remained quiet about any possible decisions they have no reason to rush. Production needs to shoot and wrap by August 1, 2014.

Kelly Marcel adapted the Fifty Shades script with E.L. James, Michael De Luca, and Dana Brunetti producing.
