Jessica Chastain joins Woman Walks Ahead. The Academy Award-nominated Zero Dark Thirty actress will play the female lead in the planned historical drama.
Having garnered critical acclaim for her last role in a movie based on real events, it was natural for Chastain to be considered for the role. She is set to play a female adviser to Sitting Bull, the legendary 19th Century Sioux chieftain. The role is described as follows:
Chastain will portray Caroline Weldon, who moved from Brooklyn to the Standing Rock Reservation in Dakota Territory to help Sioux chieftain Sitting Bull keep the land for his people. Weldon wrote letters to the federal government on behalf of Sitting Bull and lived on the land for several years with her son.
The film will mark a return to historically-based fare for Chastain. She most recently appeared in the highly-accoladed Ridley Scott science fiction vehicle The Martian and the Gothic Guillermo Del Toro fantasy Crimson Peak.
In addition, the film’s script was written by a fellow Academy Award nominee. Earning an Oscar nod for his screenwriting work on 2002’s Dirty Pretty Things, Steven Knight has completed the script for Woman Walks Ahead as well as the one for an unnamed World War II thriller attached to Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard and director Robert Zemeckis. Set to direct the movie is Susanna White, who previously helmed the Damien Lewis and Ewan McGregor project Our Kind of Traitor. No release date has been offered for Woman Walks Ahead at this point and Ed Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz, Rick Solomon and Erika Olde will be producing.
