Masters of the Universe, Angry Birds, Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, and more movies have made recent film casting, screenwriting, and director news. These films come from movie studios primarily based in the United States and abroad. The castings, screenwriters, and directors are subject to change.

Boss Level

Michelle Yeoh and Selina Lo have been cast in unspecified roles.

Yeoh and Lo join already cast Mel Gibson, Frank Grillo, Ken Jeong, Annabelle Wallis, and Naomi Watts in the Joe Carnahan-directed and written film.

Boss Level‘s plot synopsis: “Boss Level follows a retired special forces officer, Roy Pulver (Grillo), who is trapped in a never-ending time loop on the day of his death. His quest is to find out who is responsible.”

Boss Level may be released in 2019.

Masters of the Universe

Aaron Nee and Adam Nee are replacing David S. Goyer as the director of the film.

Goyer will stay on with the film project as its writer.

Masters of the Universe is based on the Mattel toy line character He-Man, which led to an animated series that ran from 1983-1985. Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam, who has the ability to transform into a warrior called He-Man. As He-Man, Adam becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

Masters of the Universe will be released in U.S. theaters on December 18, 2019.

The Division

David Leitch has been selected to direct the film.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain have been cast in the film.

The Division‘s plot synopsis: “The Division is set in a version of New York City decimated by a pandemic virus spread through cash exchanged all over the city on Black Friday. As Christmas draws near and the city descends into chaos, a group of civilians trained to respond to the crisis is activated to save the city.”

After the Wedding

Michelle Williams has been cast as the owner of an orphanage on the verge of bankruptcy, “who discovers that her organization is in contention to receive a large charitable donation from a wealthy American businesswoman, forcing her to travel to New York City where she is confronted by a past she tried to forget.”

Williams joins already cast Julianne Moore, who plays the rich businesswoman in the film.

Bart Freundlich wrote and directed the film.


Taron Egerton has been cast as musician Elton John a.k.a. Rocketman.

Rocketman‘s plot synopsis: “The film will focus on Elton John’s beginnings, starting when he was a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music and carrying over to when he reached global stardom through his influential and enduring musical partnership with his songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin. It will be a biopic that looks at the performer’s life past the glitter saturated image we have grown so accustomed to associating with the performer.”

Dexter Fletcher will direct the film, which is written by Lee Hall.

Jungle Cruise

Jesse Plemons has been cast in an undefined villainous role in the film.

Plemons joins already cast Edgar Ramirez, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall, and Dwayne Johnson.

Jaume Collet-Serra will direct the film.

Jungle Cruise was written by J.D. PaynePatrick McKay, and Michael Green.

The Angry Birds Movie 2

Leslie Jones, Rachel Bloom, Sterling K. Brown, Eugenio Derbez, Zach Woods, Awkwafina, and Lil Rel Howery have been cast in voice roles in the film.

These actors join already cast Dove Cameron, Beck Bennett, Brooklynn Prince, Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Bill Hader, Danny McBride, and Peter Dinklage.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 will be directed by Thurop Van Orman and John Rice.

Peter Ackerman is writing the screenplay for the film.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 will be released in U.S. theaters though Columbia Pictures on September 20, 2019.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase

Sophia Lillis has been cast as Nancy Drew.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase‘s book plot synopsis: “After receiving a call from her friend Helen Corning, Nancy agrees to help solve a baffling mystery. Helen’s Aunt Rosemary has been living with her mother at the old family mansion, and they have noticed many strange things. They have heard music, thumps, and creaking noises at night, and seen eerie shadows on the walls. Could the house be haunted?

Just as soon as she hangs up the phone, a strange man visits Nancy’s house to warn her and her father that they are in danger because of a case he is working on buying property for a railroad company. This warning leads Nancy and her father Carson to search for the missing Willie Wharton, a landowner, who can prove he signed away his land to the railroad and save the railroad from a lawsuit. Will Nancy be able to find the missing landowner and discover how these mysteries are related?”
