FROZEN 2: “We’re just starting” says Co-director Chris Buck

Frozen Characters

Frozen 2 co-director gives an update. There’s no hiding that possibly the biggest animated feature of this decade is 2013’s Frozen. The Walt Disney Animation Studios feature went on to pretty much dominate the world, being a two-time Oscar winner, now known as the highest grossing animated feature of all time with $1.3 billion and the endless supply of merchandise that can even give The Minions a run for its money.

In March of this year, Disney officially announced that there was be a sequel in the works with Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee returning as directors. So far, those are the only things confirmed for the feature. Maybe some of the cast will return, but there’s no word on a release date just yet. During a special screening for the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection, which included the spin-off short, Frozen Fever, MTV went and asked some questions regarding the upcoming sequel, which Buck answered with, “We’re just starting.”

“Jen and I are just getting back into the story room together and throwing ideas around. We have an overall idea, a concept, which I think is a very strong one. I’m very excited about doing it.” Buck did say though that the most important aspect of the feature is to have a message. “I think we’re very aware of what is happening in society. I don’t think any of us take [them] lightly, even though they can be very funny and entertaining, the messages that our movies have and the influence they can have on young people…if we don’t have a decent message in there, I think we’ve missed an opportunity.”

Buck also added that they are in no rush to bring out Frozen 2. In fact, they’re still in shock by how insanely popular the first film has become. “After the feature, and because of how it was received, we were all overwhelmed by the Frozen phenomenon. It took us a while just to even get back into things and do the short. And it was as we were doing the short that we started thinking about the next one.”

This may not sound like a lot, but it does assure us that Buck and Lee know what their goals are for the sequel. Maybe we’ll get more info this weekend during the D23 Expo, but for now, let’s just appreciate what we have with the first film and have a little treat with Frozen Fever when it will be released in the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection on August 18th on Blu-ray.
