New Ghostbusters Films Will Crossover In Shared Universe. Sony Pictures Ghostbusters franchise will take place in a Marvel style shared universe with companion films following the debut of the Paul Feig directed Ghostubsters movie in 2016. Sony has formed a production company called Ghostcorps (headed by Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman) which will operate with the intent of creating branding opportunities based on the classic Ghostbuster films.

Following the release of Paul Feig’s female-centric Ghostbuster movie (that goes into production in June) will be a counterpart/ tie-in film. It is slated to be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), written by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) and star Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street). It is also being floated around that Chris Pratt may be brought on-board to form a buddy-movie tandem with his real life pal Channing Tatum.

Ivan Reitman on the new Ghostbuster films,

We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew (Pearce) will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.

The original Ghostbusters is one of the rare movies revered by film geeks, movie nerds and general audiences alike. Ghostbusters has not offered the public any new material in decades and there is an entire generation of the movie going public that has not experienced the Ghostbusters phenomenon. With this much time between films the new movies can be successful by pandering solely to a new audience and foregoing the mythology, wit and charm that the film’s original fan’s fell in love with. The talented female cast of the next film and the writer and directors linked to the spin off film are positive signs that Sony is working hard to get Ghostbusters right. Sadly, as of 2015 I have seen too many reboots and re-launches to get excited this early in the projects production. I will not be holding my breath in anticipation of Sony recapturing the lightning in a bottle that they had with the original film.
