Gotham EP Describes Show as More Than Just Set in Superhero Universe. The Fox series Gotham has focused a lot on the origins of the Dark Knight’s famous villains. EP Bruno Heller revealed that the show is more than just being a series set in the superhero universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Heller explained that he wanted to go deep into the story of James Gordon more than Bruce Wayne. The EP said at the Edinburgh Television Festival that the “psychological collapse of Gordon’ is one of his favorite things to write on the show. In the new season, Gordon will be tested even further as ne becomes “a bounty hunter, looking for those monsters that escaped” from the Indian Hill research facility after the second season finale.
Heller also touched on the superhero genre and how it’s being shown on TV, saying, “I don’t think superheroes work very well on TV. Probably because of the costume thing.” He also added, “TV is about real people and faces and not so much about magic and the supernatural things.” However, Gotham doesn’t shy away from the supernatural elements since season three will be addressing a villain that does that to drastically age up Poison Ivy into a young adult.
Since this is a prequel series, Gotham is going towards the distant future where Batman will soon inhabit, even though the show doesn’t go that far. “Every season is moving towards the world, in which Batman has to emerge to save the day,” said Heller. “So every season is doubling down on the chaos and anarchy that is overtaking Gotham. So, things keep getting worse.”
The third season of Gotham premieres on Monday, Sept. 19 at 8PM.
