GOTHAM: First Teaser & Extended TV Show Trailer [FOX]

Ben McKenzie Gotham

Fox releases official trailers for upcoming Gotham series. There’s nothing like a highly anticipated launch for promoting highly anticipated upcoming projects; and the premiere of Fox’s 24: Live Another Day made that point with a teaser trailer for Gotham, arguably the most buzz worthy show on the network’s 2014-2015 schedule.

Not content to sit on their laurels, Fox then released a full trailer, expanding on the setting, plot, and character reveals of the teaser. The trailers do not give away Gotham‘s shooting location (there were plenty of landmark give-aways to the Dark Knight trilogy locales). They highlight the murder of the Waynes, as part of the city’s ongoing crime spiral, and the determination of those intent on stopping it, even as others seek to capitalize on it. Among the former, newly arrived combat vet – but Gotham PD rookie – James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) is taken under Gotham PD vet Harvey Bullock’s (Donal Logue) wing, before taking newly orphaned Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) under his; while among the latter, ambitious Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) sees opportunity in the city’s chaos, Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) gets caught between both sides of the law, and mischievous young Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) gets a good look at her future nemesis/ love interest. Rounding out the cast are glimpses of Cory Michael Smith, as Edward Nygma (aka The Riddler), and Clare Foley as a very young Ivy Pepper (originally Pamela Isley, aka Poison Ivy).

I will admit, the name change to Poison Ivy’s character baffles me, a bit; but personally, I’m just hoping these first real glimpses of Gotham, shedding insight on the series’ premise & tone, will be enough to put all those concerned Smallville comparisons to rest. This will not be ‘Gotham High,’ and anyone prepared to dismiss a Batman series without Batman should reconsider it being a Batman series. Better yet, I recommend looking up Gotham Central – an acclaimed comic set in the world of Batman, without Batman.

Gotham also stars Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, Sara Paxton as Bette Kane, and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth. No premiere date has been announced, but its series commitment on Fox is set to kick-off in Fall, 2014.
