HALLOWEEN (2018): Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode to Horror Franchise

Jamie Lee Curtis cast as Laurie Strode in New Halloween Film

Jamie Lee Curtis has been cast as Laurie Strode in the new Halloween film for Universal Pictures. The new Halloween film will be produced by production houses Blumhouse and Trancas. The new Halloween film will be executive produced by John Carpenter, Jason Blum, and Malek Akkad. David Gordon Green will direct the new Halloween film, from a script written by Danny McBride. David Gordon Green and Danny McBride will also be producers on the film.

When this casting move was announced for the new Halloween film, my initial thought was “but she reprised the Laurie Strode role in Halloween: Resurrection specifically to end her character’s storyline once and for all.”

Jamie Lee Curtis has appeared in four Halloween films: Halloween (1978), Halloween 2 (1981), Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), and Halloween: Resurrection (2002).

Apparently Halloween: Resurrection and many of the Halloween sequels will be ignored in the new film. That is a wise decision since must of them were uninspired, subpar horror films at best.

Why Jamie Lee Curtis decided to reprise the Strode role is another matter. Either the script to the new Halloween film was so good that Jamie Lee Curtis couldn’t say no or the paycheck was an inducement that couldn’t be denied. I hope it was the former. It will be hard for David Gordon Green and Danny McBride to beat the viciousness (and the little touches e.g. the mask-making) of the workprint version of Rob Zombie‘s Halloween or the beginning to Zombie’s second Halloween film.

There must be something narratively attractive in McBride’s Halloween script, there was in his Alien: Covenant script (despite that film’s numerous, overall script problems), and I am looking forward to seeing what that is when the new Halloween film is released.
