Guillermo del Toro Weighs in on Rebooting Hellboy Franchise
With a reboot of the popular Hellboy films getting made, we can’t help but wonder what director Guillermo del Toro thought on this news. He has made two films based on the character, which was beloved by fans but with a reboot coming, we won’t be seeing him making a third one.
It was earlier this year when Guillermo del Toro was trying to take Hellboy 3 off the ground and it was getting closer to reality. After gaining huge positive feedback on Twitter as the director met with creator Mike Mignola and star Ron Perlman for the threequel. It go fans riled up and excited for another crack at the comic book character, until it was confirmed that Del Toro wouldn’t be making it.
It was only two months later that we find out that a reboot was in development by director Neil Marshall with Stranger Things star David Harbour attached to play the titular hero. The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with del Toro, asking him how he felt about the news and he simply gave them his blessing. “I don’t own Hellboy, Mike does. So, you know, he is the father of the character and if he wants to reboot it, it’s perfectly fine. I got to make two — that’s two more than I thought I would get to make. So you know, as far as I’m concerned god speed and god bless.”
He does seem a little disappointed that he couldn’t make the third film and we all can see why. Mignola evidently decided that he would rather see a new take on the character rather than a third installment. We don’t have a release date yet, but production may start sometime this fall.
