The 13 minute TV special featurette entitled ‘Return to Middle Earth” illuminates the viewer on certain facts about the film: 266 day shoot (identical to The Lord of the Rings), 30 behind-the-scenes people from The Lords of the Rings returned for this film, et cetera. The featurette shows the viewer more footage of the film than they have previously seen.

Peter Jackson on some of the reasons why the The Hobbit grew from two films to three films:

It kind of surprised us a bit too. We were originally doing two films. It’s really a question of what you leave out. It’s misleading book, because it’s written at a very breathless pace. Major events happen over two or three pages, it’s like a children’s story. So once you start to develop the scenes and you do a little bit more character development than the book, plus we can adapt the appendices, which is 100 odd pages that Tolkein developed that takes place around the time of the ‘The Hobbit.’ And Tolkein himself wrote that to tie into ‘Lord of the Rings.’ So all those factors combine and  give us the material to do it.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘s plot synopsis: “The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield.

Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.”

The Hobbit cast also includes Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Richard Armitage, Dean O’Gorman, Aidan Turner, John Callen, Peter Hambleton, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, Mark Hadlow, Evangeline Lilly, Barry Humphries, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, Benedict CumberbatchStephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, and Jeffrey Thomas.
