Canada’s official entry into the 86th annual Oscars for the foreign language category will be released by Entertainment One on Blu-ray and DVD February 11, 2014. Director Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle (2013) tells the story of a mentally challenged young woman who struggles for independence and the freedom to express herself sexually. The film stars Gabrielle Marion-Rivard, Alexandre Landry, and Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin.
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the North American distribution rights to another Oscar contender, Le Grand Cahier (The Notebook) (2013). Le Grand Cahier is Hungary’s entry into the Foreign Language category for this year’s Academy Awards. Based upon writer Agota Kristóf’s novel of the same name, director János Szász’s film follows two young brothers in their quest for survival during World War II. The film won the Crystal Globe Award for Best Film at last year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
Disney UK has announced details of its upcoming release of Thor: The Dark World (2013). Alan Taylor’s action film will be available as both 2D and 3D Blu-ray versions starting February 24, 2014. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, and Anthony Hopkins. In this sequel, Thor must save the Earth and all nine Realms from an ancient menace. Malekith, seemingly stronger than even Odin and Asgard leads his race to plunge the universe into darkness. Thor must call upon his deepest reserves of strength and make some hard sacrifices to save the world from this terrible force.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release Alex Gibney’s The Armstrong Lie (2013) on home video February 11, 2014. The documentary, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, focuses on 2013 in the aftermath of Armstrong’s loss of his unprecedented seven Tour de France titles and his fall from grace.
