Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

With no new releases this week, the studios are going into the vault to remaster films in 4K. We begin with one of the most influential films of the 1990’s, Steven Spielberg’s WWII war-epic Saving Private Ryan. Closing out a very strong decade for the director, Saving Private Ryan is widely regarded as one of the most kinetic, violent films made up to that time. The raw brutality put on screen, in particular during the famous Normandy Landing “D-Day” scene, offered viewers something they had not seen in a war film up to that point. And in-turn they showed up at the theater, making it the number one film of the year.

Also releasing on 4K is 2011’s Source Code. Directed by Duncan Jones (Warcraft) and starring the always reliable Jake Gyllenhaal, the film tells the story of soldier waking up in someone elses body and discovering he’s part of an experimental government program to find the bomber of a commuter train…a mission he has only 8 minutes to complete. The film was a surprise hit, grossing $147 million against a modest $32 million budget. I have yet to see the film, but have heard very good things about it, with many favorably comparing it to other mind-bending Sci-Fi films such as Dark City, Blade Runner.

Also reissuing this week is Warner Archive’s Blu-ray remastering of the 1950 cult noir film Gun Crazy. In it, a well meaning crack shot husband is pressured by his beautiful marksman wife to go on an interstate robbery spree.  Definitely worth a look for fans of older B-movies.
