Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying was an under performing movie last year, both critically and financially, but leads my pick for the number one release this week.  Starring Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell, and Laurence Fishburne the film details the lives of three reunited Vietnam War veterans who reunite after one of their sons is killed in the Iraq War.  Directed and co-written by Linklater, the film explores many themes prevalent throughout his body of work, including family, grief, and justice.  The acting in the film was terrific, especially from Cranston , whose proven himself to be a dramatic powerhouse since his breakout role on on Breaking Bad.

Adding another entry to his filmography is Tyler Perry with Boo 2! A Madea Family Halloween.  Perry hasn’t often ventured into sequel territory, but after the first was a massive hit at the box office he was finally tempted.  I did not get the privilege of having to attend a screening of the film, but the sequel was trashed by critics, and has earned three nominations at the Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies).  But he has proven to be critic-proof as the film continued his streak at the box office.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women was perfectly times for release last year, coinciding not coincidentally with DC’s Wonder Woman earlier in the year.  Unfortunately, the biographical film could not carry over any of the goodwill and massive box office intake of the latter, grossing a paltry $1.6 million.
