Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets bombed in theaters, as I thought it would, based on its effects-heavy trailers. I don’t see it doing any better on home video. Some of the curious may rent or buy Luc Besson‘s latest. Personally, I would choose Leon: The Professional.

Of the thrillers released this week on DVD, Blu-ray, 4k Ultra, and Digital HD, The Villainess looks like it has the most to offer. From reviews for the film, the stunt work is supposedly top notch.

FilmBook writer Sam Joseph had this to say about the film:

The Villainess was not just a revenge flick, and certainly not a redemption story. Despite Byung-gil Jung’s claim of no plans for a sequel/ franchise, The Villainess was essentially a titular origin story. I think the real twist to the tale was the fact that the spectacle on the screen did not depict the actions of a monster, created by outside forces, seeking a semblance of normalcy; but rather the fact that normalcy was never a part of the equation, leaving nothing but monstrous revenge.

Birth of the Dragon is the other thriller of note this week while Jungle is up in the air. I haven’t read good or bad things about Jungle but its trailer was rock solid.
