Iron Man 2 Bootleg Leaked, $100 Million Foreign Box Office

The bootleg of Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, and Mickey Rourke, has been leaked online. Five days before it was set to be released in the United States, the highly anticipated comic book movie sequel has shown up online illegally. Multiple versions of the Iron Man 2 bootleg are already proliferating the net. This  predicament has happened in past to Hulk, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and now to Iron Man 2.  Paramount Pictures studio executives premiered the film in 52 foreign territories and the film has grossed over $100 Million so far.

“Iron Man 2” also grossed $2.25 million from 48 international IMAX venues, grabbing the box office record for a 2D title at foreign IMAX locations. Previous record holder was “Transformers: Revenge of the fallen,” which opened to $2.1 million. And if you’re wondering why the sequel is being released a week after the foreign release, it turns out that the studio wanted to give the film more time in theaters before the month-long World Cup begins in South Africa on June 11th.

This was a risky move on Paramount’s part, all to avoid entanglements with the World Cup. Their overseas earnings may off set their bootleg looses in the domestic United States market because after all, $100 Million is $100 Million. Since The World Cup, the most widely watched sporting event in the world, draws an audience similar to those that watch Iron Man 2, releasing the film early in foreign markets was a strategic move.

Here is my question on this stratagem: Why not release Iron Man 2 coterminous in all markets after The World Cup had ended? If they had done so, Paramount would not have to deal with the looses it will currently have to endure. Paramount could have also released Iron Man 2 a month and a half before The World Cup started. In Valen’s Name, who made The World Cup decision at Paramount? Poor bastard. The bootleg leak will most certainly hurt the bottom-line for Iron Man 2‘s domestic take as it did for X-Men Origins: Wolverine just not as egregiously.

What do you think about the Iron Man 2 bootleg leak, its foreign release strategy, and its foreign box take so far?
